10 Steps to Burglar-Proof Your Home

Planning to go on vacation this summer?  Make sure you take precautions to keep burglars out of your house:

  1. If you have deadbolt locks in all exterior doors, then be sure to lock & bolt all entryways.  If you don’t have any deadbolt locks installed, invest in a few.
  2. Change or re-key your locks if you have moved into a previously owned house/apartment.
  3. For all exterior doors, consider installing metal doors for added security.
  4. Place home security warning stickers on your doors & windows even if you may not have a security system installed.
  5. Install an alarm system if you don’t have one already.  Be sure to do your research for a good system…(click here to read 10 Reasons Why Most Home Alarms are Useless…and what you should do about it)
  6. Leave exterior lights on or on timer.
  7. Lock your garage door that leads into the house (people often forget about this).
  8. Call forward your phone to another number and don’t change your voicemail greeting to indicate that you are away.
  9. Leave items in the yard that will indicate someone may be home.
  10. Make friends with your neighbour and offer to watch their house if they are away in exchange for the same service.
