Eco-Friendly Insulation: When It Comes To Insulati...

Posted on July 8th, 2010

Deciding on the best way to insulate your home or project can be a daunting task.
You want the most bang for your buck but you know that traditional pink fibre glass insulation is not the most healthy, ecological or easy to use material.  Don’t feel that this choice has to be one of compromise, there are effective products on the market that are eco-friendly, health safe and do not carry the risk of that terrible itch.

WALLTITE ECO™, made by BASF, is a purple, medium-density polyurethane insulation/air barrier system.  It was designed to improve upon the energy deficiencies of fibreglass, cellulose and rockwool insulation by addressing the issue of convection current heat loss.  This industry-leading product also boasts the rights of being a more ecologically-friendly choice as it is made from recycled plastics, renewable content and contains a zero ozone-depleting blow agent.  Testing has proven that Walltite ECO™ does not off-gas any harmful toxins of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) supporting the fact that this product is not only a safe option for the environment but also creates a healthy environment for family and future occupants alike.

This alternative does carry a higher initial cost but like most eco-products, cost savings are seen over time, after the initial installation of the product.  One of the most attractive features of this product is that it doesn’t pose the threat of that pesky itch, an added treat for those undertaking DIY insulation projects.

Don’t feel you have to compromise, Walltite ECO™ is a highly effective product that will provide you with substantial energy savings over time and will eliminate the environmental and health hazards of traditional insulation products.  Klondike Contracting will keep you posted on the latest eco-friendly products and contracting solutions.

Amuse Consulting Party

Posted on June 25th, 2010

Klondike Contracting had it’s Grand Opening back in the beginning of May & we used Amuse Consulting to plan the party. From my perspective as a Klondike staff working during the party to meet & greet all our guests, Amuse did an amazing job.

Lucky us, Amuse had a 5 year anniversary party a few weeks later! It was a great networking event & I saw a few people I knew and met their friends. It was an exceptionally well-planned party, lots of interesting food, drink & vendor stations; the space was really full & had a very eclectic mix of people. Though the only drawback: I am really too tall & hard of hearing to go these things anymore.

The owner, Mark Smith, created a fun activity where guests draw a name tag (not yours) from a bowl and you had to find that person and return their name tag; thus there was also someone else out there looking for you. Mikiko was the first one to get hers back, and I saw a woman with Kelly’s, talked to her for a bit & directed her in the direction when I was leaving. My friend Cole nabbed the guy who had mine before he left the building. It was an excellent way to encourage people in a close social zone to mingle and talk to each other.

I am looking forward to attending the 10 year anniversary party!

BC Liberals’ Clean Energy Act

Posted on April 30th, 2010

via BC Liberals website

British Columbia’s new Clean Energy Act sets the foundation for a new future of electricity self-sufficiency, job creation and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, powered by unprecedented investments in clean, renewable energy across the province. Bill 17 builds upon British Columbia’s unique heritage advantages and wealth of clean, renewable energy resources.

The act advances 16 specific energy objectives by expediting clean energy investments, protecting B.C. ratepayers, ensuring competitive rates, encouraging conservation, strengthening environmental protection and aggressively promoting regional job creation and First Nations’ involvement in clean electricity development   opportunities.

“The new Clean Energy Act opens the way to an exciting new age of economic growth and job creation by unleashing British Columbia’s full potential in clean energy, power smart technologies, environmental stewardship and climate action,” said Premier Gordon Campbell. “It will maximize the value of our public heritage assets for the benefit of British Columbians by forever securing competitive rates and generating new streams of revenue for crucial public services.

“Our goal is to build on our unique competitive advantages with record investments in our historic ‘two rivers’ public power system and with new clean and renewable electricity investments and partnerships,” Campbell continued. “We want British Columbia to become a leading North American supplier of clean, reliable, low-carbon electricity and technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions while strengthening our economy in every region.”

“British Columbia has a proud history of producing clean, reliable electricity at rates that are among the lowest in North America,” said Blair Lekstrom, Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. “The Clean Energy Act builds on the work of the Green Energy Advisory Task Force with a new statutory framework to encourage new investments and jobs, strengthen BC Hydro and secure British Columbia’s power needs at low rates for generations to come.”

The new Clean Energy Act sets the foundation for three areas of priority:

1. Ensuring Electricity Self-Sufficiency at Low Rates

The act will strengthen B.C.’s legislated goal of electricity self-sufficiency by 2016 with a new regulatory framework for long-term electricity planning, bold commitments to clean and renewable electricity generation, streamlined approval processes, and new measures to promote electricity efficiency and conservation. It also strengthens protection for B.C. ratepayers with new measures to promote competitive rates and to ensure that all of the benefits from the province’s heritage assets continue to flow to British Columbians. These objectives will be accomplished through long-term planning; public investments and conservation; and new investments in clean, renewable power and energy security. The British Columbia Utilities Commission will continue to ensure appropriate rates are set in advancing government’s energy objectives and long-term resource plans.

2. Harnessing B.C.’s Clean Power Potential to Create Jobs in every Region

The act will provide BC Hydro and renewable power producers the tools necessary to establish British Columbia as a clean energy powerhouse that enables economic growth and job creation in every region. It will enable BC Hydro to maximize the value of its energy resources for ratepayers and taxpayers. It will provide a new model to secure long-term export power sales to other jurisdictions seeking clean power by partnering with renewable power producers without risk or cost to B.C. ratepayers.

The act also creates a First Nations Clean Energy Business Fund to provide the opportunity for First Nations to create investment and jobs in renewable power production.

3. Strengthening Environmental Stewardship and Reducing Greenhouse Gases

The act enshrines in law measures the Province will take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, help customers save money through conservation and protect the environment.

The Environmental Assessment Act process will be strengthened to specifically provide for assessments of potential cumulative environmental effects. In addition, the development or proposal of energy projects in parks, protected areas and conservancies will be prohibited by law.

The Clean Energy Act builds on the work of the Green Energy Advisory Task Force, appointed in November 2009 to provide insights and recommendations on a comprehensive strategy to put B.C. at the forefront of clean energy development. A summary of the Task Force report can be found at http://www.gov.bc.ca/empr/index.htm

Laneway Housing: BC Hydro Costs?

Posted on November 30th, 2009

BC Hydro has eased the installation cost for laneway housing by permitting an overhead option from the house (or adjacent power pole) to the laneway house.  In most cases, you can connect from the main house to the laneway house via an overhead connection.  This will require a new panel at the laneway house and the meter/connection at the house may also need to be upgraded.  The cost of this option will vary between $500 and $900.  In some cases, an underground connection may be necessary to provide clearance above ground.

The cost to install a separate meter for a laneway house could cost between $2000 and $5000 from BC Hydro.

Fortunately in all cases, these costs are far from the $20,000 that was rumoured to be in the media awhile back.

As part of the building permit application process for a laneway house, the homeowner should arrange for a BC Hydro technician to perform a field review of the proposed connection and to provide a cost estimate.  This could take up to six weeks and a $1000 deposit is required by BC Hydro.

Tankless Water Heaters

Posted on August 10th, 2009

Have you ever had to wait to take a bath because your dishwasher is running? Have you been blasted with scalding water when someone else in the house flushes the toilet while you were in the shower? Are you concerned about running of clean, fresh water? Do you want to do your part in reducing water consumption? Klondike certainly does!

If your water heater is more than 10 years old, consider replacing it before it starts leaking water due to corrosion and causing further damage to your home.

Tankless water heaters are great for new & older homes. It only heats water when needed, using a device that is activated by the flow of water when a hot water valve is opened. By delivering a constant supply of hot water, tankless water heaters can meet all your household hot water needs. It can also be used for supplementary heat, such as a booster to a solar hot water system.

Tankless water heaters are much more compact in size so it will save you some space. The size of course depends on the number of bathrooms in your house & how much hot water you will require at peak hours. However, the most important benefit is that it can shave ten to twenty percent off your heating bill by eliminating energy lost from warmed water sitting in a tank. Not only are you conserving water but energy as well. Further, they produce as little as half the greenhouse gas emissions of less efficient storage tank heaters. An interesting thought: if we all used tankless water heaters, we could keep 91 million tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere every year.

Lets do our part to keep our planet clean & green!
