Small can be spacious, as evidenced by our latest residential project! Custom furniture, contemporary décor and modern design helped lift this dated unit out of the past and into the present, resulting in an ‘elegant organic’ home that features space-efficient storage, nature-inspired decoration and light-bright accented features throughout.
Since space was an issue, the design and construction of this living space required attention to detail, multi-functional furniture and a lot of multi-purpose spaces. A desk can function as a buffet while entertaining, or a bench can be extra seating. This sweet little nook behind the sofa, for example, is great for reading, eating, working and storage! Our clients loved the ‘one-room’ plan in which they could transition between kitchen, living and dining, all in one room.
This space issue was more evident in the kitchen and living room – so much so that we installed a ‘tall-skinny’ refrigerator and a space-efficient dishwasher within the custom millwork in order to maximise as much space as possible. The kitchen was further upgraded with marble-look countertops and backsplash, pull-out functional cabinets stainless steel appliances and light hardwood floor throughout.
Highlighting a unifying colour throughout the entire penthouse made it feel that much larger. A neutral, natural hue combined with the addition of small accent pieces helped to enhance to coziness of the space, fade defining lines, pull the interior style together while continuing to let the home feel more open. Mirrors were also used in order to enhance natural light.
Designing and executing a small space can be daunting. This particular living space, with its limited square footage, required a certain amount of flexibility and creativity. Our partnership with AK Design, careful consideration and planning, and some simple design tricks ensured that our client got the most out of her space, helped compact rooms shine and create an enviable home worthy of a magazine spread.
