We are so proud to show you our latest project – the renovation and revitalisation of the Koerner Recital Hall and Lobby for our long-time client, the Vancouver Academy of Music. This is the fifth project we have undertaken for them and the Koerner Recital Hall project was the largest fundraising effort undertaken by VAM in 40 years; donors, patrons and the local community was instrumental in raising more than 1 million dollars.

We collaborated with SHAPE Architecture (shapearchitecture.ca) and Fluid Mechanical (www.fluidmech.ca) on the scope of work, which included a striking new foyer, an elegantly restored stage and interior of the 300-seat recital hall, re-designed house lighting, new theatre seating throughout, backstage area upgrade, enhancement of ancillary and amenity spaces, and a new green room to comfortably host all guest artists. From a construction point of view, this also encompassed an upgrade of plumbing fixtures, new millwork, new ceilings, hazardous material abatement, washrooms finishes, and mechanical work and electrical upgrades.

We also enlisted the help of BAP Acoustics (bapacoustics.com), an acoustic consultant, to maintain and improve the overall level of room acoustics in the Koerner Recital Hall. We took on their expert advice which included installing specific theatre seats that contributed to the sound absorption treatment and to treat the entirety of the recital hall’s back wall with acoustic stretched fabric. All of this and more greatly enhanced the audience’s enjoyment of their concert experience.

We loved working with the Academy’s forward-thinking executive director, Joseph Elworthy, who is creating a tremendous legacy for the cultural arts in Vancouver and building a state-of-the-arts educational facility for the talented students of today and tomorrow to enjoy. We’re grateful to have completed this beautiful performance space and played a part in transforming the concert-going experience for Vancouver’s performing arts community!
